Spring Break in the Canadian Rockies

Spring break is just around the corner, and if you're looking for the perfect family getaway, look no further than the stunning landscapes of Canmore and Banff in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Weather Talk

March is rolling into Canmore, and you know what that means – it's time to shed those winter layers and embrace the milder temperatures! With temperatures ranging from around 0°C to 8°C (32°F to 46°F), it's the perfect excuse to ditch those bulky winter coats and trade them in for lighter layers. Trust me, the whole family will appreciate the chance to finally stretch their legs without feeling weighed down by all that winter gear.

Now, we won't sugarcoat it – there might still be a dusting of snow up in the mountains, but down here in the valleys, it's a different story. The trails are starting to thaw, revealing patches of earth and glimpses of vibrant greenery peeking through the melting snow.

March Must-Dos

Now, let's talk about all the awesome stuff you can get up to with the kiddos this March. First up, hiking! Johnston Canyon is a winner for families – this iconic trail is not too strenuous, and the kids will love checking out those icy waterfalls as they start to melt away. You can either opt for a self-guided hike (ice cleats or crampons recommended) or book a guided tour which includes equipment, transportation to and from Banff, a snack and cup of hot cocoa.

Feeling adventurous? Why not try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing? The Canmore Nordic Centre which was developed to host the 1988 Winter Olympic Cross Country events is an amazing spot to spend the day. It's a blast for the whole family, and there are plenty of trails to choose from. You'll feel like you're gliding through a winter wonderland, surrounded by towering trees and stunning mountain views. With over 65 kilometers of meticulously groomed trails winding through picturesque forests and rolling hills, skiers and snow-shoers have plenty of options to explore.

In addition to its extensive trail network, the Canmore Nordic Centre features a range of amenities to enhance the skiing and snowshoeing experience. The day lodge provides a warm and welcoming space to relax and refuel, with amenities such as restrooms, a cafeteria, and equipment rentals. Families can gather around the fireplace, enjoy a hot drink, and share stories of their outdoor adventures.

And of course, you can't visit the Rockies without stopping by Lake Louise! Take a leisurely stroll and soak up those breathtaking views. Despite the onset of spring, Lake Louise typically maintains its frozen surface well into March, providing a picturesque setting for ice skating. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise maintains the icy skating areas daily so families can enjoy skating all winter long. The lake's frozen expanse offers ample space for skating, with designated areas cleared for recreational use. Visitors can rent ice skates from nearby rental shops or bring their own equipment! Trust us, it's a memory the kids won't soon forget.

Chill Out Time

After all that excitement, it's time to kick back and relax. Head over to Banff Upper Hot Springs for a soak in those warm, soothing waters. The kids will love splashing around, and you'll appreciate the chance to unwind and take in those stunning mountain views. The hot springs' mineral-rich waters are renowned for their therapeutic properties, which are said to help alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote overall well-being. The facility itself features a modern bathhouse equipped with changing rooms, showers, and amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for families.

So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable spring break surrounded by the wonders of nature in Canmore and Banff!
